Resident's Journal Club

On the third Thursday of every month, the attendings and residents of the Division of Emergency Medicine meet at a local restaurant for Journal Club. During these three hour meetings the group, lead by the Journal Club director, discusses several articles which deal with a controversial subject in Emergency Medicine.

While each article is analyzed for all of its strengths and shortcomings, the most important questions that are considered are, "Do the data in this article support the conclusion that the authors draw?" and, "Will this article change the way I practice medicine?" Repeated consideration of these two questions help to develop a habit of critically appraising the literature; a habit that will stand every practitioner in good stead in these times of rapidly evolving knowledge and techniques.

As important as the intellectual considerations, however, are the social considerations. Journal Club provides an opportunity for residents and attendings to interact in a relaxed setting away from the framework of medicine, patients, and academic rounds. Such interactions are well-catalyzed by the presence of a large quantity of food and drink at each Journal Club.

Every December, the usual Journal Club is cancelled and is replaced by a faculty vs. resident trivia contest. So far, the attendings have been winning but we residents are certain that this year is our year to shine!

A library of timely medical reviews, summaries and presentations written by the Emergency Medicine Division physicians and residents can be found in Hot Topics.
