The Toxicology section is made up of members who focus on both clinical and bench top research. They provide a vital service at the medical center and the Regional Poison Control Center.

Didactics

One strength of the toxicology rotation is an emphasis on didactics.  Drs. (put in alphabetical order) Arroyo, Dribben, Halcomb, Mullins, and Schwarz lecture and teach a monthly, two-hour session with medical students and residents. While on service, they also have daily didactic sessions.  In addition, the on-call resident rounds daily with the on-call attending(s) for all cases in-house.  The service also participates in ACMT’s monthly National Case Conference and Journal Club.
A core set of lectures for Tuesday morning conferences has been organized to expose residents to critical topics in toxicology. Didactic sessions focus on any interesting cases in addition to a core article that has helped shape the practice of toxicology and the corresponding chapter in Goldfrank’s.

Clinical Services

Bedside teaching is critical to the understanding of the pathophysiology of toxicology. The Toxicology service provides bedside consultations for all toxicological emergencies. The rotating residents are available (around the clock) as a consult service and staff each patient with the on-call attending. The section’s goal is to improve the residents’ exposure to interesting toxicology cases. Toward that end, toxicology has forged alliances in the hospital and community to heighten the awareness of toxicology services. Further collaboration occurs at the Regional Poison Control Center where residents take calls weekly while on the Toxicology rotation.
