Requirements

Washington University and Barnes/Jewish Hospital sponsors a four year emergency medicine training program leading to board certification in emergency medicine. Applicants must have finished medical school in good standing, and be eligible for temporary licensing in the state of Missouri.


Procedures

Our program only accepts applications through the ERAS system.  The application must include:

  • The completed form
  • A recent photograph
  • Transcripts
  • Dean's letter
  • USMLE Board Scores
  • Three or four letters of recommendation
  • Two of the letters should be from Emergency Medicine faculty, prefer CORD standard letter.
  • One letter MUST be based on an EM rotation in a U.S. teaching facility, preferentially one that has an EM residency. 

Personal interviews are required for each candidate in all but exceptional circumstances. Interviews will be offered to selected candidates after review of the application. See below for more information on the interview process.

13 residents are accepted each year. Contingent on satisfactory performance, reappointments are made annually.

The Emergency Medicine Residency is a part of Graduate Medical Education (GME) at Washington University. Guidelines for residency training are reviewed internally by the GME committee, who also coordinates educational and policy guidelines for all postgraduate education at Washington University, ensuring that programs fully comply with local, state, and federal mandates.

Resident Interview Process

Personal interviews for EM Residency positions are held on Mondays and Fridays, beginning in November and ending in early January..

All candidates will interview with the Program Director and up to three other individuals.

Transportation Recommendations 2017-2018

Metro link - Travels from Lambert Airport to the Central West End stop on the hospital campus (red line) and is our recommended mode of transportation.

Taxi cabs and rental cars are also available at the airport.

Uber is available from the airport.

Please allow at least 3 hours before your flight home in order to ensure enough time to get back to the airport.

Happy Hour to follow the afternoon wrap up @ approximately 3:15pm.

The evening before your interview includes a dinner with the residents @ 7:00pm. You will also have lunch with the residents on your interview day. Your interview day also includes an interactive overview of our residency followed by interviews and a tour of the medical campus.

Please have comfortable shoes to wear during the campus tour.
