Emergency Medicine Sets the Tone!
Congratulations to the Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University (BJH-WUSM) Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) team on a successful Advanced Comprehensive Joint Commission (TJC) Disease Specific Recertification on October 15-16, 2015. BJH-WUSM was the first Missouri hospital to be named a TJC Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and one of only 90 (out of 5000) US hospitals with this certification.
The reviewers were extremely complimentary of the quality of care provided for the stroke and cerebrovascular patient population. They specifically pointed out the collaboration between physicians and staff, and the best-practice hyper-acute stroke processes in our ED including the rapid medical decision-making. Compared to the many Comprehensive Stroke Centers they survey, the BJH emergency department has one of the best door-to-needle and endovascular reperfusion times in the nation and the world. They also called out the commitment of hospital leadership in adding staff to the program, the high level of collaboration between our stroke team and stroke centers elsewhere in the region, and the large cutting-edge research enterprise at BJH and WUSM.
The ED physicians and nurses provide the leadership in the pre-hospital setting, emergency department and system-wide that strongly contribute to the success of this re-certification and the entirety of our stroke care. Exposure to these best-practices have provide our residents and students with a cutting edge education in stroke care.
